Your Guide To A Calm Home
8 resources you need to declutter your space
Being a lover of unique finds + all things mis-matched, there are times in life when I feel the need to declutter, reorganize + simplify. This usually happens right at the New Year, like this week, right now. Whether that means reorganizing a closet, cleaning up table tops, or pairing down my office, sometimes a reboot is in order. The calmness I feel after decluttering is truly rewarding + fulfilling. The mind literally feels less-distracted + more available to tackle everyday tasks.
Coming up with permanent solutions can be daunting + well, the reason we don't end up doing it. Of course, some days your minimalistic dresser will look more like a laundry basket, but with a system in place it's much easier to declutter every other day than once a year. Quick tip: try taking pictures of your space once it's complete so you can refer back to it when a tornado hits.
To give you some guidance + inspiration I've compiled my Top 8 Resources for a Decluttered + Calm Space.
one | visualize + strategize
- Visualize the space you want to live in + what surrounds you | write down your goals + refer back to them periodically.
- Clean out before you buy! Establish what needs storage + buy accordingly | the last thing you want are empty bins with less space.
- Put on some good tunes | grab a drink | go!
- Designate piles | discard, donate, sell + keep | Be realistic + truthful with yourself.
- No expectations | set a time limit 10 to 30 minutes/day | if you finish today, awesome! if not, breathe, let go + repeat tomorrow!
- We like negative + positive space | don't be afraid of empty areas! | this creates rhythm + focus for the eyes.
Two | small bins
I usually cringe when I think about all the crap under my bed + above my closet. Small storage is the perfect solution for under the bed riffraff, closet junk, bathroom + kitchen items. From baskets to boxes to jars these will fit into most spaces. Try to organize by utility first, then importance. Check out these small storage bins:
Three | large storage
If you're looking to add some unique pieces to your space while also adding extra storage check out these items. Large storage pieces help declutter living rooms, entry ways + bedrooms. Think of putting extra linens + sheets, board games, dvds or bar supplies here.
Four | office duties
I love using under the desk + wall space for office storage. Utilizing wall space is always a great trick for decluttering your desk top. Whether you use bulletin boards, file shelves, chalkboards, or piping they all create vertical space for papers + other light weight supplies. Now your desk can house that inspirational fresh bouquet of flowers!
Five | simplify decor
This is something I struggle with daily, but it doesn't have to be a struggle! No joke, your brain will thank you if you simplify that coffee table. Decor pieces with texture, color or size are great as features + show-off your style. Some of my favorite decor elements are large coffee table books, terrariums, or large decorative bowls. If you're like me + want to showcase every cool + unique piece you own, chill. Put out what you love, store the others + rotate pieces throughout the year!
Six | float it
Floating shelves are sleek, minimalistic, + a must in every house. I love floating shelves because of the added storage + empty counter + floor space. This extra space can either house furniture, large storage pieces, or just remain as negative space. Here are my favorite ways to utilize floating shelves in any home. *Note the simplified decor*
Seven | ikea hacks
I love Ikea, not only for their new meatless meatballs, but because they have amazing basic storage pieces for cheap, obviously. These are my favorite Ikea Hacks for better + cuter storage! Yup, I did all the searching for you, you're welcome.
Eight | Your style
Find storage that is stylish + suits your taste! Nothing is worse than reorganizing your adorable bathroom + all you can focus on are the hideous plastic bins. If you or guests are going to see the storage, splurge on some sweet finds that won't be an eyesore. Check out these beautiful storage pieces that will fit any stylish home.
